TestWhat is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
AR is a computer program (for NCS students in grades 1-6) that helps teachers and librarians manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. The child picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own pace. When finished, the student takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that the student understood what was read). Students take AR quizzes at school on Chromebooks and school computers Quizzing from home is not permitted. AR gives students, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher or librarian then uses to help a child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.
Students using AR choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.
According to research, children who read at least 35 minutes a day with a 90% comprehension rate (average percent correct) on AR quizzes see the greatest gains.
What are points?
Most every book in our elementary library has an AR Reading Practice Quiz with an assigned point value. AR points are computed on the difficulty of the book (reading level) and the length of the book (number of words). At the end of each grading period, the librarian runs an AR report to see how many points each student earned for that none week period. Then, the librarians have an AR Celebration during the student’s library time where prizes are awarded based on the number of points earned. Those students earning 100 points become a part of the Lunch Bunch and are treated to lunch by the principal. Many students are striving to become Principal for the Day when they reach 1,000 points!

ABOUT HOME CONNECT
A few families have reported their students AR Points don't match what is reported in HomeConnect. Remember that HomeConnect is the Renaissance Learning program that allows parents to track their students AR activity from home and will email the parents every time a student takes an AR quiz at school.
In HomeConnect there is an area marked My Overall Progress to the right of this description is a toggle switch that allows parents to look at activity for the School Year or just the Current Marking Period. The default appears to be the Current Marking Period. Parents will need to toggle to School Year in order to see the points for the entire school year.
Hopefully, this will answer any questions/concerns that you or your student's families may have.
AR BOOK FINDER
Remember, we have access to every AR quiz available. This means students can read books from our school library, the public library, home libraries – basically, a book that you obtained anywhere. To determine a book's reading level, interest level and point value, use AR Book Finder.
